About event

The Mossovet Theater invites spectators to the play “The Taming of the Shrew.”

The wealthy Paduan merchant Baptista has two daughters. One day, student Lucentio comes to Padua, sees his younger sister in the family, Bianca, and falls madly in love with her. He heard that Baptista would not allow Bianca to be married off before her older sister, Katerina, who has a strong-willed character, treats men with contempt and expresses this without embarrassment. The situation with Bianca is very difficult, and the appearance of Lucentio complicates the situation even more. Two local men, Hortensio and the elderly Gremio, pursue Bianca, but she doesn't like either of them, so they have to resort to different plans to get their way. Gremio hires Lucentio under the guise of a Latin teacher to court Bianca on his behalf. Hortensio poses as a musician to try to get into her company.

While all this is happening, Petruchio, a young friend of Hortensio from Verona, pays a visit to his friend and hears the story of the feisty Caterina. He sees the situation as a challenge, which he decides to accept. Baptista welcomes this, as he is tired of Katerina's violent behavior, which complicates the family's life. He accepts Petruchio's proposal to marry, and although Katerina is against this, she cannot do anything about the father's right to marry off his daughter. Petruchio arrives at the church in an unusual outfit and immediately after the announcement of the marriage takes her to Verona. During the journey, Katerina rebels against her husband, but he begins to teach her to obey him. Upon arriving at his home, Petruchio treats her poorly and orders his servants to do the same. She is denied everything she needs to live a civilized life, including food and sleep. She is not allowed to wear new clothes or enjoy any luxuries. This wears out her resistance and eventually she submits and becomes an obedient wife.

It's time to visit her father, where Petruchio plans to demonstrate his wife's submission. Meanwhile, Hortensio abandoned Bianca and married the widow. Lucentio and Bianca, having fallen in love with each other, eloped and secretly got married. They return while Petruchio and Caterina are visiting and Baptista, relieved that everything turned out better than he expected, throws a party for his daughters. Everyone has a good time, and when the men gather together after the meal, Petruchio challenges Lucentio and Hortensio to a competition to see which of their wives is the most obedient. Each of them must order his wife to come to him. Bianca and the widow do not answer, while Katerina answers and, moreover, lectures the other wives about the duties of a wife.
