Tennessee Williams – pseudonym of the famous American playwright Thomas Lanier Williams III. Pulitzer Prize winner. Many of this author’s works have been repeatedly filmed and staged on theater stages all over the world.

Tennessee Williams began work on his play A Streetcar Named Desire. in the winter of 1944—1945 in Chicago. Later there was a move to New Orleans, where the author continued his work. By the way, the main events of the work unfold in this American city. In 1946, a trial reading of the first version of the play to friends took place — Margo Jones and her friend, who were delighted with the idea. The original name was "Poker Night". In 1947, Tennessee Williams moved to New York, where he met director Elia Kazan. The selection of actors for the first production of the play begins.

Premiere of "A Streetcar Named Desire" took place on December 3, 1947 at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York. The main roles were played by such outstanding actors as Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. This production was a resounding success and cemented the author's reputation as a major playwright.

For the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1948 Tennessee Williams was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Also in 1952, he was also nominated for an Oscar. as best screenwriter for its adaptation for the silver screen.
