About the festival
The famous impresario Sergei Diaghilev left an indelible mark on the history of art of the 20th century. He revealed to the world many talented artists, composers, directors and dancers who defined new paths for the development of art. The Diaghilev Festival, which takes place in the city where Diaghilev himself spent his childhood, strives to continue his credo and be several steps ahead of his time.
Founded in 2003, the Diaghilev Festival has become one of the most prestigious and largest festivals in Russia, a notable event in the musical life of Europe and the whole world. Under the leadership of artistic director Teodor Currentzis, the festival presents the latest achievements of modern European theater and current musical trends.
Every year at the festival you can see world premieres of operas created specifically for the festival, as well as new works by leading composers of the 21st century. This is where new ideas and creative collaborations are born. Leading directors, choreographers, musicians and artists from Russia and Europe work at the festival site, such as Robert Wilson, Peter Sellars, Anatoly Vasiliev, Romeo Castellucci, Theodoros Terzopoulos, Natalya Osipova, Diana Vishneva and many others.
Every year 30-40 thousand spectators from different cities of Russia and the world come to the festival. The events of the festival cause great resonance and are published in major Russian and international publications.
